What is DNS propagation?
When you change a DNS record, the change has to spread to DNS resolvers around the world. Each resolver caches the old value until its TTL expires and it re-checks, so for a while different resolvers can return different answers. That spreading-out period is called propagation, and it can take anywhere from a few minutes to 48 hours.
Why do different resolvers show different results?
Each resolver caches records independently and refreshes on its own schedule based on the record’s TTL. Right after a change, some resolvers have picked up the new value while others still serve the cached old one. That mix is normal and simply means propagation is still in progress.
How long does DNS propagation take?
Usually minutes to a few hours, but it can take up to 48 hours in the worst case. The main factor is the record’s TTL: a low TTL set before the change propagates faster. Nameserver (NS) changes tend to take the longest.
What does this tool check?
It queries a set of well-known public DNS resolvers (Google, Cloudflare, Quad9, OpenDNS and others) and shows what each currently returns for the record type you pick, then tells you whether they all agree yet. It reflects each resolver’s cache — it is not a guarantee of what every network on earth sees.
Which record types can I check?
A and AAAA (where a domain points), CNAME (aliases), MX (mail servers), TXT (SPF, DKIM and verification records), and NS (nameservers).
